Searching the World Wide Web
(Dr. Gutow's favorites)
There are many ways to search for information on the World Wide
Web.
Most of them involve using what is called a search engine. Most
of
these search engines may be used for free because businesses place
advertisements
at the search engine websites, hoping you will read them. Most of
the search engines will find information by matching titles (and
sometimes
content) of websites with key words that you enter. Below are
some
of the available search engines. Others may be accessed by
clicking
on the Search button in the tool bar of your browser.
YAHOO! is one of
the
easiest sites to use. In addition to searching they have many
interesting
links listed in groups. A good place to start searching.
Google is the
biggest search engine/site on the web. It will provide a lot of
hits if you are not finding much using other engines. Be aware
that it puts the sites from its sponsors first.
There are many other search engines and special databases for
journals
and books. See the links at Polk
Library for a list of other Web
Resources.
