  • ALMOST DONE!!
  • Exam on Thursday in class covering electrochemistry, metals and polymers.  Please wait outside classroom until let in, so that I can get the exams set out.
  • Last set of computer projections with the review slides has been posted.
  • An error was found in the answer key to the sample exam.  For question 19 the correct answer is C not E.

Posted 12/6/07
  • Recent Updates: Lecture power points through today, latest quizzes, worksheets, their answers and the last homwork answers are posted.
  • The following review material has also been posted: Sample Exam 4 and Review Annotations.

Posted   11/29/07
  • Recent Updates: All computer projections from Electrochemistry are posted, latest quizzes and worksheets and their answers are posted, polymer/paint lab handout and a grading rubric for it are posted.
  • Do not forget to download and read the polymer/paint lab before lab next week.
  • Wear clothes you do not care about to lab.  Making paint is at least as messy as painting.
  • Suggested reading and problems for the last section will be e-mailed out and posted during the next two days.

Posted 11/20/07
  • Exam 3 scores are now available on opens in new windowD2L.
  • Do not forget to do the electrochemistry prelab before lab next week.
  • HAVE A GOOD THANKSGIVING BREAK!
Posted 11/16/07
  • Recent additions to the class web site:
    • Electrochemistry lab handouts (prelab, instructions/data sheets, grading rubric) in the laboratory section of the class web site.
    • Suggested reading and problems for the electrochemistry and batteries section in the homework part of the lecture and discussion section.  This was also sent out to the discussion list.

Posted 11/15/07
  • Answer key for exam 3 is available as a .pdf file by clicking here.
Posted 11/14/07
  • The answer key to the review worksheet from discussion today is posted in the worksheet answers section of the web site.
  • In the last discussion today we discovered that I made a grading error on many of the quizzes I returned.  Please check your quiz to see if you had circled "towards products" on question 2d.  If you did and I took off 2 points for question 2d, I graded your quiz improperly. Since the reaction is exothermic, cooling (removing  heat) removes a product (heat) and shifts the equilibrium to the right (towards products).  If I graded your quiz wrong, please turn in your quiz for regrading before leaving for Thanksgiving Break.

  • Recent updates to the web site:  answers to latest quizzes, worksheets and suggested problems; sample exam 3; up-to-date powerpoints; and review notes for exam 3.

Posted 11/1/07
  • Answers to the latest worksheet and quiz are now posted.
  • Note: If you downloaded the worksheet 7 and 8 answer keys before 2:30 P on November 1, 2007, your copies have the following typos.  Copies downloaded after 2:30 today are correct.
    • For worksheet 7:  In Model II: Writing Equilibrium Constants, equation number (9), the exponent on the carbon dioxide should be one.
    • For worksheet 8: On page 2, Critical Thinking question 1b., the equation  should be K[H2O] = [H2SO4]/[SO3].

Posted 10/28/07
  • Answers for Equilibrium problems have been posted in the Homework Answers section of the Lecture and Discussion area.
  • Quiz on Wednesday will cover the concept of dynamic equilibrium, writing equilibrium constants/mass action expressions from balanced equations, comparing reaction quotients to equilibrium constants to decide the direction the reaction goes, and the difference between Kp and Kc.
  • Exam 2 scores have been posted on D2L.  Please check that I have recorded the correct score for you.  If you believe I have made an error please turn in your exam with a note on the cover sheet asking me to check your score and stating what you think you should have.
    • The average for exam 2 was almost exactly the same as for exam 1.  This is good as the material on kinetics (and thus exam 2) is what past classes have had the most trouble with.
    • If your score changed by ~10 points or less you are doing similarly to the previous exam.
    • If your score went up keep studying the way you are.
    • If your score went down or you are still not doing as well as you would like, consider changing how you approach studying for this course.  If you want to discuss your studying strategy please make an appointment to come see me.  There are also suggestions for studying on the class web site.

  • The powerpoints through today's lecture have been posted.  We did not get quite as far as I expected so will have a little bit more on temperature dependence and catalysis to cover next Tuesday.  I have included the slides I intend to use next Tuesday in the powerpoints for today.
  • Sample exam 2 and its cover sheet are now available on the sample exam page.
  • The Review Notes/Review Sheets page has been updated for exam 2 as well.
  • Answer keys and handouts are up-to-date through this week.  See links in the Lecture & Discussion section.  This includes worksheet 6 and quiz 5 from yesterday.

  • One of your classmates pointed out that there is a typo that was not noticed in the answers to question 11.32 a and b.  The correct answers are: a) 1-chloro-4-methylbenzene      b) 3-ethyl-1-nitrobenzene.  I will be adding this to the typo site and correcting the answer key posted on the class web site soon.
  • Some reminders about the exam tomorrow:
    1) Stop in the bathroom right before coming to the exam.

    2) Do not enter the room until we let you in.  This will allow us to get the exams passed out more efficiently and get us started sooner.

    3) Do not forget your calculator (no PDAs or cell phones allowed).

    4) You may bring something to drink (just don't spill it).

    5) You will have 90 minutes to complete 39 questions.  All the questions are worth the same number of points, although the difficulty varies.  Do not spend too long on any one question.  I recommend no more than 2 minutes per problem the first time through (you can use a little more than 2 minutes on a problem if you are almost finished with it).  The questions are multiple choice, thus you should make a best guess on problems you do not know the answer to.  Do not leave any questions blank.

    6) You need to mark your answers on BOTH the answer sheet and the exam sheet.  You will not get the scan sheet back, but get to keep the exam sheet, which is how you can check your answers.

    7) I will post an answer key in the glass case across from lab, by noon after the exam.  The answer key will also be posted on the class web site as a .pdf document and e-mailed to you.  If you notice any errors please let me know as soon as possible.

    8) GET A GOOD NIGHT'S SLEEP TONIGHT.  If you don't, it probably will not matter how you studied.
