>Clicking on the links at left will change the information displayed in this part of the window.  Home always returns you to this page.
>The pop-up menus are flaky in some versions of some browsers.  If the pop-ups do not work just click on the main link at left.  The choices in the pop-up will appear in a grey box at the top of this section.
>The animation in the upper right corner is actually a live display.  You can rotate the images yourself by holding down the mouse button while dragging across the image.  If you hold the <shift> key down while you drag you can zoom.  The live display was created using Jmol.

  • Official exam 1 scores are posted on D2L.
  • The average score (~62%) on this exam falls in the normal 60-70% range seen for this class.  If you performed near average you are probably in the C range for the class.  Students usually do significantly better in other parts of the class than on exams.  This means that you cannot translate % on the exams to your grade using the cutoffs on the syllabus.  The cutoffs only apply to your overall score.  Lab and discussion usually bring your percentages up.
  • There was a question where I think the graph could be misinterpreted.  The question numbers were:
    • Form    Problem #
    • A        5
    • B        35
    • C        30
    • D        22
    • E        25
    • F        37
    • G        28
    • If you chose the answer that corresponded to the metal indicated by roman numeral II.  Send me an e-mail explaining why you chose that instead of the correct answer (roman numeral I).  If your logic is sound, I can give you credit for that question.  Please send this information as an e-mail to me (gutow@uwosh.edu) not the mailing list.
  • If you did as well as you wanted to on this exam keep doing what you are doing.
  • If you did not do as well as you would have liked, think seriously about changing the way you are studying.  There are some suggestions for studying in the Study-Aids section of the class web site and you can also make an appointment to see myself or one of the other instructors to discuss how you are studying.  If you come to discuss how you study, you will need to bring along your study tools (notes, worked out exercises and anything else you use to study for the class).

  • EXAM IN CLASS TOMORROW
    • BRING YOUR ID TO THE EXAM.  IDS WILL BE CHECKED TO VERIFY THAT YOUR ID # IS RIGHT WHEN YOU TURN IN YOUR SCAN SHEET.  IF YOU FORGET YOUR ID, YOUR PICTURE WILL BE TAKEN AND YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO VERIFY YOUR IDENTITY BEFORE YOUR EXAM SCORE WILL BE RECORDED.
    • Get enough sleep tonight.
    • Do not enter the lecture hall until told to do so.  This will significantly speed up getting started on the exam.
    • ONLY enter through the lower doors.  You can get to the lower doors by going down the steps in the stairwell near the candy machine.  Once at the bottom turn right through the double gray doors, walk down the hall until it dead ends and turn left.  The lecture pit entrance is on the left.
    • Leave coats, hats, packs, etc in front.  You can pick them up when you turn in your scan sheet before leaving.
    • Take pencils and calculator to a seat with an exam.  Please move in so that people coming in later do not have to climb over you.  Do not move exams around.  If you move an exam you will not be allowed to take the exam.
    • Baseball caps must be worn backwards, if you must wear one during the exam.  In general hats are discouraged.
    • DO NOT START THE EXAM UNTIL TOLD TO.  However, you may remove the scan sheet and fill in your name, ID# and exam form.
    • There are 7 different multiple choice exam forms with answers and question #'s that are scrambled.
    • You may bring water to drink during the exam.  Please do not spill it.  If we have a spill the janitors will not allow any drinks during future exams.
    • Remember to mark your answers both in the exam book and on the scan sheet.  You will not get your scan sheet back.
    • The answer key to the exam will be posted in the glass case across from lab, the class web site and e-mailed out to the discussion list by noon the day of the exam.  Usually it is sent out soon after everyone has finished taking the exam.
  • Do not forget to do the prelab for next week's lab.
    • You will have to go on line to find some data.  Plan accordingly.
    • There are some abbreviations that often give students trouble when looking up safety information.  They are: (g) = gas, (s) = solid, (l) = liquid, (aq) = aqueous.
