    SUMMARY OF EXAM RESULTS:

    a) The average (60%) was significantly lower than on the first exam.  A drop in the average on the second exam is common.  How big this drop is varies from class to class.

    b) A change of 1 or 2 questions in the number you got correct (up or down) is not significant.  So if you are within 16 points of your score on the last exam you did pretty much the same as last time.  If the number correct changed by 3 or more your performance is probably different from exam 1.

    c) If your score went up keep doing what you are doing.  It appears to be working for this class.

    d) If your score went down by more than 2 questions (16 points) or you are not happy with the score you got, consider changing the way you study.  For suggestions you can look at the information on the class web site and/or arrange an appointment to discuss your study methods with me.

    e) Although all questions were answered correctly by some of the class there was one question that a significant fraction of the class got wrong.  This was the question asking for which ionization energy of the P atom will you see an exceptionally large increase over the previous ionization energy.  P has 5 electrons in its outer shell.  After taking those all off the next electron will be a lot harder to remove.  This means the 6th ionization energy is the one that is suddenly much larger.  The 4th ionization energy will show somewhat of a jump up because you switch from removing 3p to removing 3s electrons, but this is not a huge jump.

A REMINDER OF HOW EXAM SCORES CORRELATE WITH GRADES:

    a) Because each exam is only about 10% of your points for the course, ONE GOOD OR BAD EXAM SCORE WILL HAVE LITTLE EFFECT ON YOUR GRADE.

    b) From past classes I can provide you with ROUGH guidelines for how AVERAGE exam score correlates with final grade. BE AWARE THESE ARE ONLY ROUGH GUIDELINES as a few students with exam averages in one range ended with a grade in the next higher or lower range, because of how they performed in other parts of the class.

Grade range                   Average Percentage Score on exams GREATER THAN
    D                                            40%
    CD-C                                         50%
    BC-B                                         62%
    AB-A                                        78%

    c) As you can see, these are lower than the % cut-offs on the syllabus.  What this reflects is that historically most students do better on a percentage basis in other parts of the course than they do on exams.
